Samobor – General Information

Samobor, situated in the north-western corner of Croatia, near the border with Slovenia, has an important position for the surrounding area and people who gravitate to Samobor as their natural, governmental, social and especially cultural and business center.

Samobor area spreads over around 250 km2. The urban area has about 18,000 inhabitants, while about 25,000 live in 77 rural settlements.

Samobor is a town of European standards of economic and social live; people rather move to Samobor than move out of it. This is confirmed by over 6,500 new inhabitants, or 16 % more in relation to the census of 2001. (2001 Census: 36,206 inhabitants, end of 2009: 43,560 inhabitants).

Craftsmanship has been the principal economic area throughout the entire history of Samobor. This tradition ensured Samobor was and still remains an economic exemplar and the center of crafts for the entire surrounding area. Since the founding of the Republic of Croatia and despite many limiting factors of the socialist economy, Samobor remained one of the leading communities and towns by its economic power, employment rate and many other factors of personal and communal standard. The reason for this are numerous benefits Samobor provides to craftsmen.

Today, Samobor is a modern regional center of industry and crafts, and the economy of Samobor has retained its vitality and adapted to the new, market-oriented business conditions, having found new technological and organizational forms of surviving on domestic and international markets.

Crafts, small and medium entrepreneurship, with 1,167 registered crafts and 732 trading companies (according to the records of the Ministry of Economy, Work and Entrepreneurship at the end of 2009), as well as the social life, placed Samobor on the second place on the Forbes's list of the most successful towns.

Municipal Government : The Municipal Council is a representative body of the inhabitants of Samobor, elected on direct general elections, according to the law. The Municipal Council has 25 councilors who regulate legal acts within the rights and responsibilities of the town's government, as well as other provisions in accordance with the law.

The mayor of Samobor is Krešo Beljak.
