Grad Samobor

Tradition and distinctiveness

Traditional economy based on agriculture and livestock breeding of the past gave way faced with the requirements of modern times. The economic history of the area also includes mining, metalwork, leather industry, older forms of textile manufacturing and processing, as well as crystal cutting.

Modern life requirements, conditioned by different lifestyles and new technologies, brought numerous new branches of economy, such as various crafts, industry and services (especially catering and trade).

Traditional economic activities are the leather industry ("BAN" in Rude), manufacturing of bermet and mustard (Filipec family in Samobor), construction industry "Samoborka" based on dolomite stone from Samobor hills, manufacturing ceramic furnaces and fireplaces ("Kodrić-Silex" in Hrastina near Samobor), crystal glass cutting ("TUK", "SAKI"), also the famous Samobor kremšnita, a cream custard pastry (the best may be found in restaurants on the King Tomislav Square in Samobor), wax and honey products (Oslaković in Perkovčeva street and others), as well as the famous Samobor pork chop dish - kotlovina.

Tourists, those modern nomads, may found traditional and natural originality in agricultural products on the Samobor market or village farms and culinary pleasures prepared by Samobor's caterers. The stream trout fishing guarantees the ecological preservation of numerous picturesque waterways, and the wildlife - from pheasants, hares to does and wild boars - add to the rich forest animal life. The herbs of Samobor hills and Žumberak mountain are the basis for herbal teas and other preparations (SUBAN in Manja Vas, 5 km from Samobor).
